Project Overview:  Mission Statement

The goal of this project is to make books accessible to those living in and around Numancia, Aklan (on the island of Panay in the Philippines) through the establishment of a library. Possible future extensions to the project include public use computers with Internet access and a bookstore, the proceeds of which would go to achieving the goals of the library.

Although this project is being initiated in the United States, it is important that the library not become yet another vehicle for the influx of American culture into the Philippines. Books will come primarily from publishers within the Philippines with a focus on topics of regional applicability.

Initially, a particular emphasis has been placed on acquiring books on history, politics, literature and economics. Reference books and children's books also figure prominently.

Because books written in the local dialect of Aklanon are virtually non-existent, titles are mostly those written in Tagalog or English. While Tagalog (or more precisely, Pilipino) is the national language, English is the language of the public school system in Numancia and throughout the Philippine Islands.

It is the Project's goal to steadily increase the collection over time.
