The Remaining Right Side of the Buddha
Part 13: Lear Heouy

Monday - May 31, 1993

The following morning, Paul was sick as a dog. I said goodbye to him and Ken and to Phnom Penh and headed for the airport and a 9:45 flight to Bangkok. I had overstayed my visa by four days but this was no problem. I simply had to pay US$3 for each day of overstay. The flight was 1-1/4 hours and uneventful. Customs was a breeze and I made my way across the city to Khao San Road where I found a depressing little room to call home. Bangkok was all very familiar from six years prior - it felt good to return to a place but I hated Khao San Road for the travellers' mecca that it had become. I picked up the Bangkok Post and there, in a bit of light reporting from Cambodia, was a photo of the crocodile from the night before being carried from a Morris Catering DC-3.
