Ladakh, India

High up on the Tibetan plateau, in the northeastern portion of Jammu and Kashmir is Ladakh. The people of Ladakh are Tibetan in their culture and religion and there are also Tibetan refugees. The terrain is incredibly barren - few clouds creep across the awesome height of the Himalaya. Only where rivers carry water to habitation do you find plant life.

The native dress includes top hats with curved brims, elf-like shoes that curl up at the toes, long coats, goat skin shawls, and elaborate jewelry. To add to its exoticism, Ladakh wasn't opened to outside visitors until the mid-seventies.
