This curious girl was walking with her grandmother in the streets of Lijiang, a beautiful village in northwest Yunnan that was once the capital of the old Naxi Kingdom. The Naxi are descendents of Tibetan nomads, and in recent times, have suffered from the Chinese government's attempts to supress their traditional matriarchal practices. Today, Lijiang is recovering from the earthquake that devastated the area in February 1996.
